Gravity (1/2)

ENDGAME SPOILERS AHOY. FAIRLY WARNED BE YE, READERS.

Gravity

Though the Grave Eclipse ended and the world saved, it came with a sacrifice, as is the unwritten law of saving the world. And if Volechek hadn’t regained his sanity, the party would’ve been without a leader, and Belinsk its princess. Sveta was relatively quiet to begin with, but her brother’s sacrifice left her practically mute. Karis wanted to say or do something, anything, but she didn’t know what it was like to lose a member of her family. What could she say?

There was no celebration when they returned to Tonfon; only awkward silences and understanding glances between Matthew and Sveta. Apparently the spirit bonding gave him a sort of sixth sense as to what she was feeling or something.

Give her some space, Matthew had said as they boarded the ship.

How could she, when all Karis wanted was to be at Sveta’s side and give her comfort? She’d always been particularly fond of the young beastman since the day they met in the Teppe Ruins. It was nice to have another girl in the party for once, and a fellow Jupiter Adept at that! They hit it off right away. As time went on though, she found herself watching Sveta, who was cute and just as tough as the boys and the way she blushed was just so adorable and she liked how those catlike eyes almost glowed in the dark… the slight traces of a growl in her otherwise soft voice…

Karis didn’t know how long it took for her to realize she may have more than platonic feelings for Sveta, but she thinks it started when Sveta left them outside the Teppe Ruins.

“Karis, you are a good person. I like you very much…”

But what really made her realize it was when Rief had whispered to her while they were hunting for the Umbra Gear, “How can you not notice that you’re crushing on Sveta?”

Either way, seeing Sveta so miserable was breaking Karis’s heart.

That night, Karis awoke for maybe the tenth time and noticed Sveta’s bunk, empty save for the Umbra Gear. For a moment she debated with herself whether to leave Sveta alone or not. In the end, the need to comfort her friend in any way possible won out.

She found Sveta on deck, leaning on the edge of the starboard and staring at the horizon. Her long lavender hair was released from its usual twin braids and flowed freely in the wind. Karis winced when the wood creaked below her feet; Sveta’s ear twitched, alert to her presence.

“Um,” Karis stammered. Very smooth, she thought snidely to herself. “Sveta?”

This time Sveta looked over her shoulder at Karis, but said nothing. Her face was blank and her green eyes lacked the usual shine of reflected light.

She looks… broken.
